The University has been required to make $13.5 million in cuts to its 2009-10 budget, including a $2.5 million reduction of part-time faculty and staff, and has reduced full-time equivalent enrolment to 6,800. As a first-generation student, Daisy Galvan is forging a new identity for her family, and hoping to stand out amidst thousands of students seeking employment in today’s rough economy. “I kind of had to figure this all out by trial and error because my parents never went to college,” said Galvan, a senior Communication Studies major from Clovis. “I want to give myself the opportunities they never had and help steer my family in a different direction.” Her activities include volunteering for the Lamda Pi Eta Honors Society, serving on the Facilities Committee for the University Student Union Program Board, and interning for the Office of Communications and Public Affairs. After graduating, Galvan’s goal is to eventually become a Communication Studies professor. “I really like school, and I’ve come across some really great professors here,” she said. “I’m inspired by their dedication to the students.” |
