CSU Stanislaus Budget Central
Budget Central has been created to provide the latest news about the CSU Stanislaus budget in light of the state’s severe cuts to the California State University system. The University has been required to make $13.5 million in cuts to its 2009-10 budget, including a $2.5 million reduction of part-time faculty and staff, and has reduced full-time equivalent enrolment to 6,800. Richard “Dick” Brown, who was the first California State University, Stanislaus student president and later served for many years on the University’s Alumni Board, passed away on December 10, 2009, at Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock. He was 74.An injury in a 1958 water skiing accident that paralyzed his legs ended Brown’s career as a Modesto Police Department officer and he enrolled in the teaching program as one of the first students at then Stanislaus State College when it debuted at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds in 1960. He was an active and popular student at Stanislaus State during the time the new college’s student government structure, Warrior mascot, and school colors were being selected. Brown was also honored as “St. Nicholas” at the college’s 1961 Holiday Fantasy Dance along with Barbara Silveira who was named “Merry Christmas” of the event. After earning his bachelor’s degree and teaching credential, Brown taught for 15 years at Brown Middle School (now Dutcher School) in Turlock. He then moved to Tracy to teach at a Christian school before returning to the Turlock area to complete his teaching career with another 20 years at Denair Middle School. Brown was an active member of the CSU Stanislaus Alumni Board for more than 40 years, serving as president for a number of years. He was a director of the Christian Berets for 10 years, also serving as a pastor and board member. Born in Turlock and raised in Escalon, Brown attended Modesto Junior College and served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957. He worked as a salesman for then Turlock radio station KTUR before becoming a police officer. He was buried at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery.
