Budget Central has been created to provide the latest news about the CSU Stanislaus budget in light of the state’s severe cuts to the California State University system. The University has been required to make $13.5 million in cuts to its 2009-10 budget, including a $2.5 million reduction of part-time faculty and staff, and has reduced full-time equivalent enrolment to 6,800. TV actress Kim Johnston Ulrich and her husband, Robert Ulrich, a Los Angeles casting company owner and director, returned to their alma mater CSU Stanislaus on May 11 to talk with a group of theatre students and faculty in the Studio Theatre. Taking time out of their busy schedules to talk about their successful careers, they passed along tips about what it takes to break into the intensely competitive field of show business. The couple met while attending CSU Stanislaus. Robert recalled spending an intense month in the Studio Theatre when he had a role in a student production of “Camelot” and Kim was involved with makeup as a then-aspiring Art major. Kim, from Ripon and a 1980 Art Degree recipient, was a long-time soap opera series star, first on “As the World Turns,” and then for nine years on “Passions.” She has also had many TV and movie roles. In addition to her soap opera starring roles, Kim has had many starring guest roles on a number of TV series, including “Matlock,” “Cheers,” “3rd Rock from the Sun,” and “Seventh Heaven.” “You never know if what you study in college is going to be what you end up doing,” Kim said in describing herself as “one of the least talented art majors” when she was at CSU Stanislaus. “I can say I’ve become a successful actress and have been working very steadily at it for 25 years now.” Robert, a native of Modesto who started his career as an actor and came to CSU Stanislaus to complete his master’s degree in English in 1980, said it took him many years to find his niche in the casting field. He is founder and co-owner of the major company Ulrich, Dawson, and Krister Casting, considered one of the top three in the Los Angeles area. His firm has handled the casting for shows such as “CSI,” “House of Pain,” “The Mentalist,” and new shows like “Supernatural” and the Fox TV musical comedy “Glee.” The Ulrichs advised students to consider careers in all phases of the entertainment industry and not just acting. Talking about their experiences with the highly challenging nature of the field, the Ulrichs encouraged students to become knowledgeable and aware, well prepared, persistent, and professional. “I always wanted to be an actor, but my passion is for the business, and that’s where my acting experience ended up paying off,” Robert said. “You have to be able to sell yourself in this business, and you have to be flexible to get there.”
