Dr. Elmano Costa, a professor of Teacher Education at CSU Stanislaus since 1995, became the Christie Sue Whalen-Saxton Professor of Teacher Education on July 1. The endowment was established to support and enhance teacher-training programs. Whalen-Saxton received her B.A. degree in 1977 and her teaching credential in 1979 from CSU Stanislaus.

University President Hamid Shirvani announced the appointment in March 2010. “Dr. Costa’s commitment to advancing education in the Portuguese community, his sundry contributions to the department and college, and his attention to students make him most deserving of this prestigious professorship,” said Shirvani.

Currently the Director of the Office of Field Services for the Multiple Subject Credential Program, Costa also has expertise in the areas of diversity and immigration issues, second language learners, school administration, and Portuguese-American issues.

A native of the Azores, Portugal, who taught and served as a principal in area schools for many years, Costa has done research which has focused on bilingual education, teaching and education administration, and reading and literature programs for school children. He serves as Director of the Center for Portuguese Studies at CSU Stanislaus.
