Mary Jo (Focha) Pacheco, ’69 BA Spanish, ’70 Teaching Credential, proudly claims the distinction of being the first freshman accepted in 1965 at what was then the newly opened Stanislaus State College campus. Although admitting that her first visit with her family to the new campus which had only two main buildings and lots of wide open spaces was “unimpressive,” the Tracy native said she received “a very fine education” that helped her launch a 36-year career as a teacher in Escalon. Pacheco retired four years ago and still cherishes fond memories of how her college-going experience featuring small class sizes, supportive faculty, and people who opened their homes to rent rooms to students helped her make a successful transition to a successful career. “I had a great time at Stanislaus,” Pacheco said. “As a girl coming from a hard-working dairy family in Tracy, I received a very high quality education.” |
